Among Us was released back in 2018, but even now it’s very popular – thousands of players are constantly logging into servers, bloggers are streaming, and YouTube videos are racking up millions of views. Interestingly, even the developers didn’t expect their game to become so well known.
To explain simply, Among Us is an analogue of the card game Mafia, only with more complex actions and additional tasks. Many people know the rules of the game. In Mafia, there is a city in which bandits, police, civilians and other characters live. The task of the bandits is to kill all the civilians, and the task of the police is to determine who the bandit is. In Among Us it’s more or less the same. Several characters end up on a spaceship. Most of them are crew members and some are assassins. Depending on the options chosen, anywhere from 4 to 10 participants can play at the same time.
At the beginning of the game the roles between the users are automatically allocated. Some become crew members, some become assassins. Players can pre-configure their appearance, but it’s still not possible to determine the role on the ship. The gist of the game is as follows: the crew members are busy completing tasks consisting of repairing the spaceship, while the assassins try to interfere with them in every way possible. In order to do this, they have to hunt down and kill the crew members without being seen.
Tasks are located in different parts of the ship and represent solutions to simple puzzles: connecting the wires in the electrical panel or collecting debris in the ventilation system. But the difficulty is that all the while the crew members are being watched by assassins. And as soon as they spot a lone player, they immediately kill them. The assassins additionally have the ability to move stealthily around the ship through the ventilation and sabotage it by breaking equipment and closing doors.
When the player sees the corpse of another crew member he can call an emergency vote. This is where the game of ‘Mafia’ begins. Each member tries to convince the others who they think is the murderer. The results of the vote determine who is thrown into open space. But the difficulty lies precisely in the fact that the voters are living human beings who make their choice based on their own conclusions. In the end, if the last or only impostor is thrown overboard, the crew members are declared winners. Otherwise, the game continues.
It’s especially fun to play Among Us in the company of friends and communicate via voice. Then you can share your thoughts and determine who the enemy is. The victory of the crew members is declared when all the assassins are thrown out or all the tasks are completed. The impostors, on the other hand, need to kill all the astronauts to win.
Some of the problem is that most of the audience Among Us are children. So it becomes very difficult to vote and identify the killers. Other than that, the game is very interesting and entertaining.
Its main advantage is that Among Us is completely free. The developers earn money from the advertisements that periodically appear between matches. In addition, users can spend money to purchase a unique skin. But the game is only free for mobile devices. You will have to buy it on Steam for your PC, but it is cheap.
The main problem for the Russian-speaking players before was that the game was not localized. However, this problem has now disappeared, and there are no difficulties with completing the quests.
