Might & Magic

Review of Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes

Many RPG aficionados have long awaited something of note on mobile devices. And we pinned our hopes on Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes. This game may have appeared on smartphones several years ago, but it has only reached them now. It originally appeared in 2009 on the Nintendo DS. After that it was ported to consoles and then to personal computers. By the way, the first part of the name Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes appeared for a reason. The game has a direct relation to the known universe and is considered to be a spin-off from the main title. However, don’t expect a complete resemblance to its predecessor. In Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes the gameplay is very different.

The result is an excellent anime-inspired role-playing game with puzzle elements. Ten unique heroes and many kinds of units are available for the players to create invincible army. Artifacts that can be used to enhance certain characteristics can help. After gathering your soldiers, you can go and explore the immense game world. In this journey to meet dangerous monsters, bosses and other heroes. The single-player campaign takes around 20 hours to complete.

Game plot

The plot of Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is not too complex, but fascinating. Players learn that there’s a fairytale world called Ashan where humans and elves have lived together for years. However, around their kingdoms are mysterious territories inhabited by black mages and necromancers. Because of this, humans and elves always live in a state of readiness for war. But as it turns out, dangerous neighbours are not the main threat. The fairytale world is suddenly invaded by an army of demons that destroy everyone in their path. It is up to the players to assemble a strong army and fight back the intruders.

Gameplay

Players have to assemble an army of heroes and send it to explore the kingdom. Here you can complete main and side quests, communicate with other characters, search for artifacts and engage in combat with warlike demons. Of course, you shouldn’t expect any revelations from the quests. Most of them are very simple and involve searching for items or destroying demons. Dialogues are present, but they are linear and it is not possible to choose the answers.

When completing quests the player gains experience and raises the level of the hero. In this case, no special participation in the distribution of pumping points. The hero simply gets a little stronger, faster and more durable with each level.

Battles in Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes

Some players may have the impression that the game is just a casual version of RPG and therefore do not pay enough attention to it. However, pay attention to the combat system and Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes reveals another side.

While it would make sense if the developers simply took the combat system from Heroes Might & Magic and adapted it for mobile devices. Touch controls would have been perfect.

But Capybara decided differently. They based the combat system on Puzzle Quest. The end result is quite interesting. The entire screen of the mobile device is divided into two parts. At the top are the warriors of the enemy, at the bottom – the player’s units. To attack, it is necessary to assemble a vertical row of three identical fighters. One turn is spent on loading and one turn on the attack. To win, you must not destroy all the opponents, but get behind the line of the playing field. The mechanics are simple at first glance, but in combat everything looks very interesting. Heroes learn new abilities, squads improve and get stronger. As a result, you’ll be able to use defensive walls to win, and rearrange your fighters into more effective formations. There are also special units in the game that allow you to fight your way through obstacles faster.
