Child of Light

Ubisoft’s review of Child of Light

Big game companies have been shunning creative and original projects of late. They are more focused on games that are guaranteed to make big profits. Independent projects do not fall under this definition, as it is very difficult to make money from them. That is why year after year the players see the sequels and additions to the well known games.

However, there are exceptions even here. And even major companies like Ubisoft sometimes do interesting and creative projects. The Child of Light game is one of them.

The plot of Child of Light

In the story, the player will control a little girl who has a serious problem. The girl’s name is Aurora, and one day she discovers that she has woken up in an unusual forest, which is inhabited by strange inhabitants from another world. The young princess gets acquainted with a new creature – the Igneekulus droplet. She tells Aurora about the events and history of the game world. It transpires that the sun, moon and stars used to exist here, but were once stolen by the Black Queen. It’s up to the girl to make peace in this magical place and save it.

Game world

The young princess embarks on a journey through vivid and picturesque locations. What’s interesting, the world is not a simple backdrop for the game, but a real living organism which is constantly shimmering and moving. The scenery is amazingly detailed, and it’s clear that the artists paid attention to even the smallest of details. Each new location is different from the previous one and has its own special features.

Gameplay

Travelling through the magical world Aurora will not just happen. She receives a crown with wings that allow her to move around the locations in any direction. That said, the world in Child of Light is not an open world. It is a specific chain of locations, which can only branch out slightly depending on the specifics of the passage.

An interesting feature of the gameplay is that the player must simultaneously lead both Droplet Igniculus and Princess Aurora. The girl is controlled by the keyboard, her partner by the mouse. Thus, the partners will have to go through the whole storyline and complete several side quests. In any case, get bored during the passage will not be. The dungeons are inhabited by various enemies, each of which represents a difficult challenge.

Battles in Child of Light

In Child of Light, battles are played in turn-based mode. Your opponents will attack one another in turn. However, if an action has to be chosen, time freezes and the player can think about what to do next. This combat tactic is already familiar to PC games. And although it is a bit specific, it allows you to create your own strategy and learn to make the right decisions.

In total, the player can place only two heroes on the battlefield, but you can change them in the process of battle. Each character has its own characteristics and specialisation. There are support fighters, healers and tanks in the game. There is no universal set of fighters, so you have to pick them up for each new battle.

As a result, Ubisoft managed to create an interesting and original project that will definitely appeal to those gamers who missed new and unusual games.
